Gentlehost are a small, co-operative company providing quality hosting for NGOs, charities and small businesses. We started a hosting company as we couldn’t quite find the services we needed to run sites effectively for clients on the design and build side, with commercial Drupal and Wordpress managed hosting being unaffordable for smaller budgets. We specialise in Drupal and Wordpress hosting, but we have a lot of knowledge in cloud-based systems and are happy to help find you a solution that works, whatever your needs.
We’re not exactly a traditional host - we work very personally with most of our clients through our other businesses and see Gentlehost as more as a relationship than a service. We’re not going to drown you in acronyms or geek speak - we know the number one thing you want is just for your website to work! At the core we’re grass-roots tech activists creating solutions for low budget groups, so feel free to contact us with any questions or queries.
We host your site on Aegir, a Drupal hosting system on our dedicated EU green-energy server. This is managed hosting. Drupal is a large, complex piece of software that needs regular security updates, we install and monitor these as part of this package. Other companies charge 4 figure sums for this level of service! We will update all your site modules once a month, and security updates as soon as possible. Optimised for around 20,000 visitors a month, talk to us about packages for sites receiving much more than this.

If you’re on little or no budget, then we can host your site on our USA server. This would receive no updates or direct support by us, but shell access is free so you can do it yourself!

A fully managed WordPress hosting solution providing speed and security, with access to any Wordpress theme or modules you need. Designed and optimised for sites up to around 100,000 visitors a month, talk to us about packages for sites receiving much more than this.

A managed WordPress hosting solution for smaller businesses and individuals with sites receiving less traffic, providing speed and security but for less cost. Designed and optimised for up to 20,000 visitors per month.
£250 PA
A semi-managed WordPress solution at very low cost. We provide no support on this package, but give you full access to maintain and manage it yourself.
£125 PA
We can register and manage any domain (including DNS hosting and full IPv6 support) for you for £40 PA. We will happily configure it to work with the Google App suite, set up redirects and manage your DNS for you.
We can provide various types of email hosting (including groupware) depending on the size and requirements of your organisation. These are generally best discussed when ordering, we have a variety of solutions from free to enterprise level we can advise on.
We’re happy to give you honest, impartial advice on hosting, tech solutions and general geek things. We also will do any extra work you want on anything. For small jobs, we do it directly and charge a day rate of £300, we may offer discounts for not-for-profit groups. For larger jobs, we also run Off the Grid - a complete design and build service.
